Romanesque and Celtic Inspired Paintings
An interest in the aesthetic, historical and symbolic use of allegorical imagery most notably, bestiary and zoomorphic forms which appear in Romanesque frescos, stone carvings and illuminated manuscripts has been the foundation for my paintings for the past eight years. I have used these images, originally decorative or didactic, rich in history and symbolic interpretation, to create works that explore the nature of spirituality in painting. Similar to medieval artists who were inspired by the encyclopedias of nature, including the “Physiologer”, one of the earliest exegetic reference works which contain the source for Christian animal allegories, I am inspired by the rich array of symbolic interpretations of enigmatic figures, animals and fabulous creatures. It is because these sometimes humorous, irreverent and often erotic images have been created and located within the context of the Christian Church that I find most fascinating and from which I draw inspiration.
